Gary A. Appel is of-counsel at PTAA. He has more than 30 years of experience in real estate law with a niche in property tax consulting. Appel specializes in real property valuations, historic preservation tax incentives, and enterprise zone tax abatements. He began his real estate career at CBRE in New York, handling major commercial real estate transactions from 1984 to 1991. During that time, he obtained his J.D. in taxation from Fordham University School of Law in New York. He later joined Buchanan Ingersoll, P.C. in Aventura, Florida before starting his own firm, Bates-Appel, Inc., which focused on property tax assessments including historic preservation tax incentives both locally and nationally. Appel obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in managerial economics and business from Carnegie Mellon University and an LL.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He is a member of the Miami-Dade County Preservation Board.
